Impact: Major Changes in Mission Perspective

Since its inception in 1976, the USCWM has collected the insights of thousands of experienced field missionaries and developed them for the benefit of the global mission effort.

1976

Today

Many were calling for a moratorium on missions, claiming that the missionary task had been completed.  Unreached Peoples are a widely accepted reality, and this awareness is fueling the most significant advances in the mission effort.
Missionaries typically focused on saving individuals. Missionaries focus on "planting churches."
Mission strategies centered around political nations (countries). Mission agencies recognize the strategic significance of Biblical nations (people groups).
Mission agencies leaned on the enormity of the task to motivate, emphasizing the hopeless plight of two billion lost souls. Mission agencies recruit with hope, in anticipation of God finally being glorified among the last 10,000 unreached people groups.
Missionaries often assumed that mission field churches should look like the church back home. Missionaries increasingly recognize that the church must look and feel "native" to the target people group.
Mission was often reduced to a shadow of "partnership," in which western funds alone were sent to needy lands. The divisive and stifling dangers of "money alone" missions is widely understood, and true "partnership ministries" emphasize the need for missionaries and funding.
Missions was understood as delivering a message. Missions is understood as summoning peoples "from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan to God" (Acts 26:18).
Of approximately 24,000 distinct people groups worldwide, an estimated 17,000 were not even targeted nearly 2,000 years after Christ! Only 10,000 or so groups remain unreached, and almost all of these have been targeted by one or more mission agencies!
